Steel and glass elliptical boardwalk
Gruppo Helsinn di Pambio Noranco-Lugano
M. Marcionelli, Bellinzona
The steel and glass boardwalk links the two buildings that host the Gruppo Helsinn head office in Pambio-Noranco, Lugano.
Length: 31 m
Height: 5.60 m above the cantonal road placed
The main features of this linking boardwalk are the elliptical cross-section, that has the main axis placed vertically, and the need to link two buildings that are set orthogonally on both sides of the cantonal road, renowned for its considerable traffic.
The casing load-bearing structure, considered to be placed externally and composed of steel centerings, gives a feeling of lightness to the boardwalk itself.
On each side of the boardwalk they are placed some PVB sandwiched glass bars, an Argon filled chamber, and two other PVB sandwiched sheets. The glasses used are self-cleaning and thermally hardened for safety sake.
The metal wainscot is composed of insulating panels.
Some fan coil units, arranged on one side of the boardwalk, in order to get the most of the floor area, assure air-conditioning.
The design in greater detail, based on architect and engineer’s plans, was made on a 3D parametric CAD by the Officine Ghidoni SA engineering department in Riazzino.
According to plan, the part to be placed over the road and the middle pier, were completely assembled in the workshop. The main element was composed of a supporting structure, wainscot panels and glasses.
The prefabrication choice was shared with Helsinn firm Management, who wanted to minimize the structure environmental impact.
So Helsinn boardwalk represents an outstanding work whether architecturally or structurally.
