Description

The tested Ferriere Cattaneo SA - Officine Ghidoni SA consortium began transporting some first electro-welded  elements of beam, that will compose the second railway bridge over the Moesa river, to the building site, in Arbedo- Castione.

In 1995 the same consortium constructed the first element intended to replace one of the old steel bridges over the Moesa river.

This element is a mixed structure composed of  longitudinal electro-welded steel supporting beams and cross beams.

The supporting beams were divided in stumps with a length ranging from 23.5 meters to 36.5 meters and a maximum weight per element of 43 tons, then installed on piers. Two 100 and 250 tons truck cranes have been used to install the beams placed above the river. The main beams have been assembled by welding into the building site because of the limited possibilities to enter in it. Later they have been moved and lifted.

Some secondary cross beams will link the main beams diagonally. The railway running surface will be made of casted-in-place concrete, thus making everything monolithic. The element of 1995 and the current one will be repositioned so as to reach their final position and to strengthen the railway line in the Bellinzona area, considering the Gotthard Base Tunnel opening.

The assembly and welding of the steel supporting structure of the bridge was completed in the middle of the second week of January 2015.

Rails will be placed on the flat arch, that we are casting on these beams in several phases.
